THE ‘16th’ member of the ‘USA’ class left Bosnia by road on December 11 destined for Britain… and a future as the world’s first ‘disabled-friendly’ locomotive.
Despite delays at Romanian customs, the lorry booked to transport Djuro Djakovich-built ‘Pirate USA’ 0-6-0T No. 62-521 made it to the Zenica steelworks of Mittal Steel safely, albeit two days late. The locomotive was finally loaded and on its way by 1pm on December 11.
After clearing local customs, No. 62-521 headed to the Croatian border at Slavonski Brod, where it was built.
The Mid-Hants Railway was expected to receive the 1954-built machine on December 19 after a circuitous trek across Europe totalling more than 1,250 miles. Once at the MHR, members of ‘Project 62’, the group spearheading the scheme and also caretaker of ‘No. 30075’, will carry out an in-depth survey of the locomotive. It is intended to overhaul the engine as ‘No. 30076’ in British Railways livery, to include disabled access to the footplate where possible (SR326), creating an 0-6-0AET (Access Enhanced Tank).
