Severn Valley Railway: Damages by Floods.

Due to the recent, appauling wet weather, the Severn Valley Railway has suffered no fewer than 45 land slips and slides over its 16-mile line.

On Tuesday 19th of June, dramatic storms poured over a month's rain onto already saturated ground, in just 30 minutes. Under this torrent, huge swathes of land have been literally washed away, leaving lengths of line suspended in mid-air.

Most of these landslips can be fixed by existing maintenance teams, but in up to 10 places the slips are so severe that heavy machinery is needed to restore the line. Early estimates indicate this could cost up to and in excess of £1,000,000 for a complete restoration.
